Samsung Galaxy TabPro S – Review

In the past, Samsung tried to be a part of the 2 in 1 Windows computer market with a hybrid ultrabook, Samsung Ativ Q. However, we have never seen the Ativ Q in markets. Actually, that was not the Samsung’s first attempt to do a windows tablet, but they have never succeed in this area. This year’s Samsung TabPro S is Samsung’s another attempt in that area, and we will see if it can survive.

Design

Well, it is basically a Samsung tablet so you can see design items from other Samsung tablets. However, it is metal, sort of. I mean, still you will see plastic everywhere on the tablet expect the frame. I cannot understand why Samsung cannot made a tablet with metal ( and maybe they can even add some glass ). You can say that a metal tablet will be more expensive. Yes, it will be, but we are not talking about mid-range tablet. It supposed be the flagship tablet of Samsung.

Okey, it has a slim and sleek design, but I do not think TabPro S will be able to compete with Surface’s metal design. And, Surface is the device that Samsung tries to compete with.

Samsung TabPro S

Score ( Design ) – 6.5 out of 10

Pros – Sleek and slim design

Cons – It is more expensive than Surface Pro 4, and yet does not come with a metal body.

Screen

Screen is one of things that I love about the TabPro S. It has a 12-inch 2160 x 1400 Super AMOLED display, and the screen is just amazing. Even though it is not as good as Retina Displays, it is surprisingly good.

Samsung TabPro S

Score ( Screen ) – 8.5 out of 10

Pros – Good resolution and colors

Cons – No cons about the screen

Performance

I will not talk about its specs at the beginning because if I say the specs before talking about its performance, then your optimistic opinions about the tablet will change.

It has a decent performance. Even though you cannot play games on it or even use any professional apps, it will not  disappointed you if you are browsing on the web or using the office apps. However, the problem with the tablet is the same problem that we have seen on the latest MacBook ( it was a hint about its specs ). This means, it is fast on Chrome or any browser until you open several tabs. The worse thing is that neither the RAM nor the processor is able to handle a lot of things. Just to remind that MacBook does not have any problems with RAM, but TabPro S does.

So let’s talk about the specs. It comes with Intel Core M. Okey, I do not love the Core M, but I can survive with that. The spec that I hate about the TabPro S is the RAM. It comes with only 4GB of RAM. For the base model, 4GB is acceptable, but YOU CANNOT UPGRADE THE RAM as you can with the Surface Pro 4.

To sum up, I really disappointed with TabPro S’ hardware. It is not enough. Well, I know that Surface Pro 4 also comes with Intel Core M and 4GB of RAM with the base model, but you can upgrade to Intel Core I7 and 16GB RAM.

If you were able to add more RAM and upgrade the processor on TabPro S, then I would be actually happy about the tablet.

Score ( Performance ) – 5 out of 10

Pros – It’s specs for the base model is same with Surface 4

Cons – You are limited with 4GB RAM and Intel Core M, and there is no way that you can upgrade these.

Battery

It is another topic that I do not like about TabPro S. I could only get about 6 – 7 hours. Don’t get me wrong, it is not awful, but after using MacBook series, it cannot just compete with MacBook because of the windows itself. For example, if you close your MacBook’s screen, the machine will not use any energy. However, when you close your windows machine, it continues to work. This means, when you close and then open the TabPro S, the battery life decreases, even if you didn’t do anything.

Score ( Battery ) – 6 out of 10

Pros – 6 hours is really  not bad

Cons – The battery life could be better, but there is nothing for Samsung to do. This should be done by Microsoft itself.

Conclusion

It is a good windows machine, but I would choose Surface Pro 4 for $900 since it has a better quality. The problem with the TabPro S is that you cannot get something better than Core M and 4GB of RAM. If these specs are enough for you, and if you want a thin device, it is a perfect choice. Otherwise, do not even think about the Samsung Tab Pro S.

Pros – Slim design. Pretty awesome display.

Cons – Awful performance. Battery life is not really good.

Score

Design – 6.5

Screen – 8.5

Performance – 5

Battery – 6

Overall  – 6.5
