Samsung Gear VR – Review
VR is being seen as the future for which companies are trying to be a part of this “future”. This list of companies includes Samsung. However, unlike Oculus or HTC, Samsung Gear VR only works with mobile phones ( with the latest Note and S series, to be more exact )
First thing you will notice about the Gear VR is how it differs from Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR. Both Rift and Vive VR are huge black boxes. However, Samsung’s Gear VR is rather small and white. Personally, I like its design, but still Oculus Rift looks better in terms of quality. Don’t get me wrong. It has a good design and quality, but Oculus Rift looks better. Also, the second most obvious difference is the fact that there is no cable. The main power unit in the Gear VR is your phone which you will place inside the VR. That means you will not struggle with the cables.
Score ( Design ) – 7.5 out of 10
Pros – Slim and light
Cons – No cons
This is not a topic where I will talk about its specs, but it is a topic where I will talk about the user experience. As it has no purpose to run the latest PC games, it has a decent performance or the latest Galaxy S series has a decent performance because Gear VR does not actually handle the games, and it does not even have a screen. That means your phone is responsible for handling the content and showing it in the VR format which is the reason why only S6 and S7 family, as well as Note 5, are supported by the Gear VR. However, Gear VR itself has a motion sensor which means it can know if you are moving your head or not. This is not done by your phone. As a result, since the phones that you can use with Gear VR are high-end phones, there is no lag. The experience is smooth and good.
Score ( Performance ) – 8 out of 10
Pros – No lag. The experience is smooth.
Cons – Still, do not expect to see the performance that you will see with Oculus Rift and GTX 980 TI.
I Like nearly everything about the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive VR expect the setup process. Setting up those VR headsets are like punishment. There are a lot of things that you have to do if you want your VR headset to work. However, you do not need to spend one hour to set up the Gear VR. Just put your phone ( Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S6, S6 Edge, Note 5 or S6 Edge Plus ) on the front side of the device, and you are ready to go. I mean you need to download few apps for the Gear VR, but when you put your phone on the VR, the headset can automatically download them for you. This is something that I love about the Gear VR.
Score ( Setup ) – 10 out of 10
Pros – The only thing you really need to do is to put your phone on the Gear VR.
Cons – No cons
VR is all about the content, and right now, VR is like the first days of 4K. If you remember those days, then you will know that there were no 4K content that you could watch few years ago, but now you can even watch 4K videos on youtube. I mean right now, VR is better than 4K in the matter of content as you can find many games, videos and movies for your VR headset. With Gear VR, you can watch 360 videos ( on Youtube or on the internet ), but what if the videos you love do not support this format. Then, you will find yourself in a virtual theater. This is created by Samsung. In this cinema theater, you can look at the other seats, but when you look at the screen ( in the theater ), you will see your video. I guess this is a perfect idea to watch non-VR videos. To sum up, the number of VR content is not
To sum up, the number of VR content is not bad but is not enough either. However, the problem with the VR content is that there are separate videos, games, etc for different VR headsets. I guess Google should release Android for VR. [Update: Google already did that with the new DayDream]
Score ( Content ) – 7.5 out of 10
Pros – Well, you can find 360 videos on Youtube, Facebook, and on the internet.
Cons – Still, it is limited.
Samsung Gear VR is one of the few good VR headsets that is made for mobile. The bad thing about the Gear VR is that it is only supported by the latest high-end Samsung smartphones. However, it is clearly the best mobile VR headset. Still, it cannot compete with Oculus Rift or with HTC
Still, it cannot compete with Oculus Rift or with HTC Vive VR, but also do not forget that it costs only $99 + high end Samsung phone. ( while you will need a really good [ I mean really powerful ] gaming PC for Rift and Vive VR )
Pros – Easy to use. It is not heavy.
Cons – Only works with S6,S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus, Note 5 and S7 family.
Design – 7.5
Performance – 8
Setup – 10
Content – 7.5
Overall – 8.25
