iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are here

Apple just announced the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus ( not a Pro though ) which use similar design with the last generation iPhone 6S but there are major changes.

Apple iPhone 7

To start with, there are new colors. First, there is “Jet Black” which replaces the old matte Space Grey with new glossy finish. There is also a second black color which is basically called as “Black”. However, don’t worry. Other color options such as Silver, Gold or Rose Gold are still here.

The other important change with the design is the lack of the physical home button. Although you will see a metal circle that reminds the traditional one, you cannot actually click the button. Instead, it is pressure-sensitive like Force Touch or 3D Touch which, in other words, let you feel like you are clicking but you are not actually clicking but just touching. It is the technology.

The phones are also water and dust proof but as you can do with Apple Watch, you cannot dive with your iPhone yet.

The other important point with the design is the lack of the headphone jack. Yes, it is gone and now, Apple wants you to have wireless headphones. That is why, they have an optional AirPods which looks really like the AirPhones but without a cable. They have a chipset inside and can provide 5 hours of listening with only one charge. However, AirPods are not included in the box. Instead, there is updated EarBuds which now use lightning over headphone jack. There is also a new adaptor from lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack but there is one problem. Unless you are using wireless headphones, you cannot listen music while you are charging your phone. We hoped that Apple would include an adapter which would solve this issue but the adapter included in the box only converts the lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack.

Anyway, beside of the lack of two traditional things ( the home button and headphone jack ), the most important change was the camera.

The standard iPhone 7 has a new 12 megapixel sensor with f/1.8 which lets 50% more light than the previous model. The new camera is also 60% faster and 30% more efficient. There is a new flash as well to help the camera in the dark environments. The quad-LED flash produces 50% more light. The front camera, by the way, is upgraded to  7 megapixels sensor with automatic image stabilization.

However, the real improvements with camera are saved for iPhone 7’s big brother, 7 Plus. There are two cameras on the back. First one is the 28mm one for wide angle shots like the main cameras on the previous models. Second one is 60mm for closer shots. This way, you can literally zoom without effecting the resolution of images. When you click on the “1x” button, the phone changes the sensor and starts to use the second one. But if you want to have even closer pictures, then there is up to 10x zoom. Even though after 2x, the software does the job, still, the pictures that you get is 4 times better than other software zooms.

Including the 3D Touch, the displays of the 7 and 7 Plus have also been updated to show the images taken with the camera better. Now, they are brighter ( 25 percent ) and has a wider color gamut. However, the resolution is still same. With iPhone 7, you will get a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and 1080 x 1920 on the 7 Plus.

Preorders starting today, the phone will be available to purchase on September 16th.
