Apple Music was revealed on June 8, 2015, but it wasn’t until June 30, when it became available on selected regions. This means the service is on the market for more than a year and I have been using it for this period instead of Spotify.
Before Apple Music, Spotify was the service that I was paying for. It was great after all. I could find every song I wanted; it was available on every of my devices and it could show lyrics. In other words, it had all the features I cared about. However, then I see the Apple Music. For starters, it had a better design and it was something important for me as I really care about how modern and good looking is the User Interface. Then, it had a good potential because it was created by Apple, the biggest tech company in the world. In other words, it promised a better future.
In its early days, I would choose Spotify over Apple Music. But during its first year, its Android app has gone out of beta; the service got exclusives and it was redesigned.
Now, it is a real treat for Spotify, and in this article, I will be sharing how I see these two major music streaming services.
Compatibility is among the most important things to consider before start to pay money per month. In this case though, Spotify is the winner.
Spotify is available on every where. It is present on iOS, Android, Windows and Mac OS. You can even find its app on Windows Phone and on consoles although these versions are not great and do not come with every feature. There is also a web version which allows you to listen music without downloading its app.
To sum up, you don’t have to worry about finding Spotify.
Apple Music, on the other hand, is available on iOS, Mac OS and surprisingly, on Android. Even though Android app is no longer in beta, still, it is not as good as the Apple Music app on iOS. In other words, it is really limited to Apple devices because it is an Apple service. For this though, I am not criticizing Apple Music because it isn’t trying to be on every single platform, and we are talking about Apple.
Apple Music had a better design than Spotify since its first day. It had a white clean design. Now, it is redesigned. Still, the white is the most used color but it is more colorful and its design looks more professional. What do you even except from Apple, biggest tech company who is known for its practical and simply designs ( if you don’t count Apple Pencil, Apple Magic Mouse 2 and battery case for iPhone 6S and 7. )
Spotify is not bad in terms of design but I think it needs a redesign.
Anyway, for whom, design is the killer point for choosing a music streaming service, Apple Music is the winner. I mean I do care but there are more critical points.
Can you find your favorite music on Spotify or Apple Music?
As long as you have the device which can be used for Spotify or Apple Music, the most important question is if those services have the musics you want to listen.
Both Spotify and Apple Music have a lot of songs. More precisely, as of August 2016, there are about 30,000,000 songs on Spotify and Apple Music reportedly have more than 40,000,000 songs. This doesn’t mean that you will listen all of them but you can find any music on both of the services. However, there is thing that is worth mentioning. Apple Music has a lot of exclusives while Spotify has many songs from unknown musicians although you can find popular titles on both of them. That is the biggest difference between two services in terms of music library.
Apple is a huge company and they are more successful in adding exclusives musics after all.
How about sound quality?
Unless you pay for Spotify Premium, the sound quality that you will get for the musics would be 160 kbps which is not bad after all. However, if you subscribe to Spotify Premium, this number will rise to 320 kbps. This is something nice for music lovers.
On the other hand, Apple Music offers 256 kbps. Yes, it is worse than Spotify but unless, you have fancy expensive headphones and more importantly, your device has a sound performance above standard, you will not even be able to tell the difference.
However, again, if you are a music lover and really care about the quality, Spotify offers a better performance, at least on theory.
You can use Spotify for free but that means, you will see ads, and cannot skip music for more than three times. Also, the sound quality you will get will be low.
However, if you are willing to pay, you can subscribe to Spotify Premium for $9.99 per month which will remove the ads, allow you to skip as much musics as you want and more importantly, will allow you to download musics to listen them even when you are offline.
Meanwhile, Apple Music does not have a free subscription model and can only be used when you pay $9.99. This way though, you don’t see any ads, don’t have any limitations and can listen songs offline.
Nevertheless, if you want to give them a try, both Spotify Premium and Apple Music can be used for free for three months.
Well, Apple Music looks better, have more music, does not have any limitations and provides a better user experience.
On the other hand, Spotify can be used for free but the Premium model provides better sound quality than the free version as well as than the Apple Music. Also, Spotify is available on everywhere whereas Apple Music is only available on Apple devices and on Android.
If most of your devices are made by Apple, then Apple Music is definitely a better choice. However, if you don’t have any Apple device or only one, then Spotify is better. If you don’t care about the availability though, still, Apple Music is a better choice because there are obviously more musics, has exclusives, and comes with online radio.
