Elon Musk is ready to take us to the Mars but are we ready?

Today, Elon Musk was at the stage in the 67th annual International Astronautical Congress held in Guadalajara, Mexico. Even though he talked about many things including reusable rocket and carbon fiber fuel tank, the main idea is to take us to the Mars. The first stage would be making trips to Mars and then back to Earth, but at the bottom of that, lies the idea of colonizing the Mars.

Normally, it would cost you around $10 billion if you want to see the Mars by yourself. However, if Elon Musk and his company, SpaceX, can successfully start to operate SpaceX Interplanetary Transport System, then, it would only cost about $250,000 for a trip to the red planet. You can ask how can it be possibly to decrease the price from billions of  dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. The answer is the reusable space crafts.

First, you will be taken to a rocket with 99 other people ( although this number might increase to 199 other people in the future to decrease the price for one ticket ) after you pay the price. Then, this rocket which is as tall as 40-story building will start to rise thanks to 42 Raptor engines. After you pass the atmosphere, the stage one will be completed and the booster will be dropped from the main space craft. However, booster will not crash to somewhere but instead, will go back to its launchpad located in Cape Canavera where it will be attached with a new spaceship full of fuel. Then, the booster will go back to atmosphere and after releasing the fuel ship, it will return back to the earth. Fuel ship, on the other hand, will attach to the main space craft and after it transfers fuel, it will also come back to the earth. Then, the main space craft will able to continue its journey and then, its next destination will Mars.

By the way, it takes about 3 months to get to the Mars so you should really bring something to play with.

After exploring the Mars though, you will need to come back to the Earth and the same ship that took you to the Mars will take you to your home planet. And it is really important for the spaceship to be reusable if we want to decrease the price. This way, the cost is cut to only quarter million dollar.

Beyond that though, Elon Musk really wants to colonize the Mars, but this will take thousands of ships and attempts, in other words, about 40 to 100 years. But there is one slight problem. SpaceX does not have enough money to do this despite the fact that they have reached to a good point. However, with refunds from other private companies and even governments, Elon Musk’s dreams may come true.
