Surprise! Intel Core M is now called as Core i
In the last years, there were two types of Intel processors you could get on a laptop; Core M and Core I. While Core i processors were the more powerful ones with which you could do anything without worrying, Core M chips were the more slower ones that were used in really thin laptops without fan. However, there was a huge performance gap between them. With Core i5 and i7, you can really do a lot of things including professional stuff and you don’t have to think about if your computer can handle those. On the other hand, there is a doubt about Core M’s performance. With Core M, you don’t even know if you computer can handle several browser tabs.
With the 7th generation Kaby Lake though, Core M processors are gone, sort of. Technically, those 4.5watt processors still exist in the Kaby Lake family but they are called as Core i5 or even Core i7.
That is so bad because unless you are searching the every bit of internet to find out the code name of the processor of your laptop, you will not know if you are getting a real computer processor or a chip that has the same performance with your phone.
There is one way to find out though. You need to look at the SKU numbers of the chipset. While the real Core i processors use the name ending with the letter “u” such as the i3-7100U, i5-7200U or i7-7500U, Core M processors has the letter “y” at the end ( i5-7Y54 or i7-7Y75 ).
You can say that it is not really hard to find out. However, most of the brands are just saying “Core i5 & i7” without their SKU numbers and not everyone in the world will make a search to find the SKU numbers.
As you can see, the new Core M naming is bad for customers but good for manufactures. This way, the MacBook will sound as powerful as MacBook Pro so it will be easier for them to advertise their products. Because Core i is a popular and well-known series while Core M is not as popular as the i and it does not have a good reputation either.
