Apple announced new MacBook Pro with a completely new design
Today, Apple held its Mac event, and the only product ( except the TV app for the Apple TV ) they announced was the 2016 MacBook Pro.
Coming in two sizes, 13 and 15-inch, there are actually three models. The entry 13-inch model, replacing the Air lineup, yet another 13-inch model, but with an additional touch bar and finally, the 15-inch model for power users.
All the three models share the same design although there is a size difference between the 13 and 15-inch models. Available in two colors, silver and space grey, they look like the slimmed down version of the last generation. Nevertheless, there are major changes with the design as well. For example, both small and big version come with bigger touchpads and with a new keyboard. Even though the keyboard uses the same butterfly mechanism from the MacBook, Apple says the keys are improved to make the writing more comfortable. However, the biggest addition is the touch strip.
Simply called as “Touch Bar”, it is a strip of retina screen replacing the traditional buttons. It is available on every 2016 MacBook Pro expect the entry model. It can be used to control the basic features such as the volume or brightness, or it can even be used for app-specific controllers. For instance, when you are in Safari, you can switch or preview tabs and even open a new one. So far, Touch Bar is not only supported by the Apple apps, but also by some third-party ones including PhotoShop and Office products.
There is also a TouchID on the right side of the TouchBar. But keep in mind, TouchID is only available in models with the TouchBar. Like on the iPhone, you can use your finger to unlock your device or to confirm payments on the Apple Pay.
In terms of performance, 13-inch model offers either i5 or i7 whereas the 15-inch model only comes with i7. Surprisingly though, those processors belong to the Skylake family. It is not clear why Apple decided to use Skylake in their most expensive laptop lineup when there is a better and newer family in the market. However, in any case, new MacBook Pro offers a better performance compared to the last generation.
You can buy the entry model without the touch bar starting today for $1499 although you will need to wait a couple of days to buy the models with Touch Bar and Touch ID. Also, those high-end models will start either at $1,799 or $2,399 depending on the screen size.
