Tesla cars no longer need a driver, but they are required to have one

Tesla is one of the leading companies with the autonomous vehicles. However, neither Model S nor Model X was fully autonomous. The systems in those cars were not fully capable of traveling without the control of the driver. Now, Tesla announced that from now, they will produce every Tesla car, including Model S, X and 3, with a new hardware.

This new hardware equips 8 cameras ( upgrade from one ) which can view all around the car. There are also total of 12 ultrasonic sensors. When all of those sensors and cameras work together, they can detect and see both hard and soft objects. The system, by the way, is being powered by Nvidia Titan GPUs which are 40 times faster than the old Tesla computers.

Tesla Autonomous Vehicles

As a result, new hardware is capable of Level 5 autonomy. The highest level in the autonomous vehicles. It means the car doesn’t necessarily need a driver at all. However, keep in mind, we are not still there yet. Even though every Tesla vehicle produced from now will have the new hardware, they want to be sure that the system works well. In other words, you have to wait little more, like more than a year. At the end of the 2017, Elon Musk will demonstrate fully autonomous driving from Los Angeles to the New York City. Until that demonstration though, you can’t make your car drive itself without you.
