Samsung Galaxy S3 | Review
Having caught success with the Gear S2, which last year went on the market, Samsung is challenging its competitors by closing a large part of their deficiencies with the Gear S3 and going through design changes.
In the smartphone market, the stones are in a great position. But everything is just beginning in the smart watch market, which is still in its infancy. The pioneer of widespread awareness of Android Wear in the forefront, the balance that Apple later incorporated has improved. Samsung’s move away from the Android Wear platform to its own operating system caused Android Wear to lose blood, a new era for Samsung itself. Samsung Gear exceedingly achieve the success they want with the S2 Samsung, and now, with the new Gear S3, they set the bar even higher. The new watch, which does not give up on the rounded lines in the sense of design, is one step closer to the real “classic” watch experience.
A classical watch from the outside; a smartwatch inside
The design has a much more importance with the smartwatches than with the other devices. Because smart watches have a different mission when compared to the design of other devices. It is not easy to bring a smart piece to the head of an existing object. It is important not to break away from traditional design conception and to offer features that will make life easier. Clearly, Samsung’s first smart watches were a touch-sensitive screen that could be worn from one hour to the next. With the Gear S2 breakthrough, they took an important step towards approaching the classic clock, and Samsung continues to progress in the same line with the Gear S3. With its sleek lines and slim details, the Gear S3 promises to be the closest smart watch experience to the classic clock.
In the device with rounded corners, the first thing that attracts the notice is the fact that the device has a bigger screen with a bigger body. Another important detail is the frame. In the classic model, there are no lines, but in the frontier, there are lines on its rotating frame to make it easier to keep the time. On the inside of the frame, which is close to the screen, there are numbers in both of the models. The two buttons on the right side of the Gear S2 are also located on the new Gear S3. The screen of the device with stainless steel body is protected by Gorilla Glass technology. Thus, it shows resistance against scratches. In the Gear S2, it was only possible to attach the desired strap on the classic model. In the Gear S3, the 22 millimeter straps can be worn as desired both on the Frontier and on the Classic model. So you do not have to think about the strap when choosing between two devices.
The design draws attention to its similarity to the “real” clock, but does not appeal to every segment with its large screen. As the screen size is big, it is necessary to say that the watch is a little bit big especially for the users with thin wrists and for female users. Also, the rigid lines of the device make the Gear S3 more of a watch for men. At the very least, the screen size may have been smaller or the user may have been offered a choice of a smaller screen size.
More functional than before
The differences in the software of Gear S3, which share the same interface as Gear S2, are evident when we descend deep. The greatest innovations are those of hardware origin. The device with built-in GPS no longer turns into an ordinary smart watch that only functions as a watch when there is no phone. With built-in GPS support, even if you do not have a phone with you, the activity can be synchronized with the S-Health data on the phone.
One of the most criticized spots in the previous model was that there was no speaker. The microphone could give voice commands to the device, but you could not hear any responds. The speaker included in the Gear S3 allows you to receive voice notifications, listen to music over the clock, hear voices in practice, and make important voice calls.
The Gear S3 has three main sensors. These are altimeters, accelerometers and barometers. Altimeter; It measures the altitude and perceives how high you are located from the sea level. This is similar to the athlete’s job. The barometer measures the atmospheric pressure. Thus, regional information about the weather is being accessed instantly. Notification of pressure changes is available if requested. Accelerometer makes it possible to measure the speed of a vehicle while traveling.
With the new model, you are getting a prettier user interface. In Gear S3, where the always-on display mode is supported, the clock interface can be fully visible when the watch is used in always-on display mode. It is useful to keep this mode open to get the nearest experience to a real watch.
Advanced S-Health application now allows you to enter into a competition among the people. In accordance with this, the interface is designed to show how many steps your closest competitor has taken. The watch automatically detects activities such as hiking, running, cycling and rowing, and records these activities without even having to press any key. In addition to the activities we are familiar from the Gear S2, activities such as yoga, pilates, shuttle, rowing can be followed.
As in Gear S2, Gear S3 is also suffering from an inadequate number of applications. Although some important applications such as Spotify have recently been introduced, there are still no applications of the social networking giants. On the other hand, the Gear S3 is quite ambitious about the clock interface. Particularly close to the mechanical watch look, the interfaces add a different atmosphere to the watch. Apart from the interfaces available on the device, it is also possible to download a wide variety of interfaces from the store. The watch, with IP68 water resistance certificate, can withstand water for up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes. Not recommended for use at sea, it shows resistance to rain and water splashes.
Decent battery performance
One of the most prominent features of the Gear S3 is the battery life. Nowadays, most of the smart watches are not even able to run for a full day. The Gear S3 has a large battery underneath its thickened body. In addition, the processor is efficient, making the Gear S3 one of the first smartwatches you should look at if you are care about the battery life. When the display is always-on, it can be used for 3 days, close to 4 days. This time may vary depending on the level of use and screen illumination.
As a result, Samsung Gear S3, which comes with a stylish design, a successful display, a decent performance, is something you should take a look at if want to get a smart watch. There is no reason why you should not give a chance to Gear S3, one of the best smart watches of the year, if its downsides are not a problem for you, such as the lack of applications, the lack of iOS support, and the lack of design appeal to every person.
