What we know about Galaxy S8

What we know about Galaxy S8

The Samsung Galaxy S8 ( the company’s upcoming smart phone ) must be a bang, but not in the sense of the explosive Galaxy Note 7. The latter has cracked the reputation of the manufacturer neatly, now it is time for a new flagship again. The expectations of the S8 are correspondingly high and the rumors bring nearly daily new hints to the technical equipment of the upcoming top smartphone to the light. These speculations are likely to come to an end in April 2017. Then the South Koreans will officially present the Samsung Galaxy S8 ( at least ) according to 9to5Google at an in-house event. The following model numbers are available for the S8 fleet: Samsung SM-950 for the Galaxy S8, SM-955 for the Galaxy S8 Edge or Galaxy S8 Plus.

Every smartphone design is faced with a fundamental conflict: On the one hand, the display should be as large as possible, on the other hand, the smartphone must remain half handy. With the Galaxy S8, Samsung could come close to the ideal compromise. Photos of an alleged prototype show how the screen fills almost the entire front. Our design study of the phone shows the same. A physical home button does not exist, instead the control symbols are shown on the display. Even a fingerprint sensor can not be seen on the front or on the back. This suggests that this is either very narrowly integrated under the display or at the side. Thanks to the new design, the display size can grow without the device itself becoming larger. Industry recognizers like VentureBeat assume that there are two models: a Galaxy S8 in S7’s size with a 5.7 inch display and a larger Galaxy S8 Plus or S8 Pro in the S7-Plus format but with an enormous display diagonal of 6,2 inches. The case design is based on note 7, with curved edges on the front and back. In the case of the S7, only the rear side was arched at the edge, the S7 Edge only the front side.

For some time, the industry speculated that Samsung could sell the S8 with a docking station. This has connections for mouse, keyboard and a monitor. In other words, the Samsung Galaxy S8 would be capable to turning to an Android-PC. Microsoft, as is known, has the same Continuum function in the Windows 10. According to a patent application now pending, Samsung calls this docking station simply “DeX”. Whether it is as an optional accessory or is included in the box, the reports indicate that S8 will have this support in any case.

One of the biggest innovations is the improved language assistant with codename Bixby. The successor to previous S-Voice versions will be controlled from the car to the TV all sorts of Samsung products. Developed by the company Viv Labs, which was only acquired by Samsung in the middle of the 2016, which also developed the first language assistant Siri for Apple. Reuters says that Viv Labs already confirmed that a new smartphone will actually get a helper based on Viv Labs’ development. As with Amazon Alexa, the Bixby language control should be easily integrated by third parties into their own apps. Ex-factory, it should be used in all pre-installed Samsung apps. According to AndroidCentral, Viv Labs’ ‘wizard software is similar to the variant of Apple and Google. Viv Labs’ variant, however, should be able to better understand more complex queries in a direct comparison and be able to develop their own programs to meet new tasks. Bixby is much more than a language assistant: According to Sam mobile, it [ Bixby ] can also access the camera and recognize objects or texts, provide additional information or make a purchase. Because Bixby is also to get paid opportunities to buy about it.

For a long time, there were speculations as to whether Samsung could put on a 4K display (3840×2160 pixels) for sharper VR display. But now many rumors are running in one direction: it remains with the Galaxy S7’s known 2560×1440 pixels. Nevertheless, according to SamMobile, the device offers a significantly improved display, as a Super AMOLED panel with sharper subpixels is used. The color representation in virtual reality environments should also be better. Samsung Display, the company’s own screen division, recently released a new technology video. The 30-second clip shows the advantages of the AMOLED technology (short for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode). You can see the colors on a smartphone dummy, which is surprisingly accurate with the previous leaks and rumors: the display is almost to the side edge, the home button is missing. Also, Samsung could have showed an S7 with this screen, but it does not show a smartphone that is already available. Perhaps this is a first look at the S8 – from the official side.

Good news for the fans of the currently not available Note 7: According to SamMobile, Samsung will also offer a styles with the S8. Unlike the Galaxy Note models, the so-called S Pen is not in the case. Not surprising: Finally, a new Galaxy Note 8 is due to appear in the middle of 2017, when the screen pin probably sinks back into the display.

According to SamMobile, the headphone jack should be dropped. If this were true, the Galaxy S8 would be another top-of-the-line smartphone without a 3.5 mm jack. Because the iPhone 7, the Moto Z, the HTC One Evo and the HTC-U series dispense without a headphone connection. Instead, the Galaxy S8 is equipped with a USB-C port for charging and listening to music. Samsung is supposed to offer a compact in-ear headphones with Bluetooth connectivity ( to compete with the AirPods of Apple ) parallel to the launch of the new top model. Whether the small In-Ears as an optional accessory or as a free offer with S8 is not given.   Exciting for business users is a feature that Samsung will obviously incorporate into the S8; AllAboutWindowsPhone cites from a presentation that Samsung plans such a feature for the Galaxy S8. So the new Android smartphone can be connected to a desktop monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. In other words, the S8 converts to a desktop PC with Android operating system. The same is true with the so-called Continuum function in Windows 10. It would be conceivable that Samsung would market such a model as an S8 Pro package including a suitable docking station and with a stylus.

In our design study, the Galaxy S8 has two camera modules on the back. This would be for different zoom levels or sharp depth experiments like the Apple iPhone 7 Plus or for other photo tricks after the example of the Huawei P9 or Mate 9. But it is controversial whether the dual camera really for the Galaxy S8 standard model Comes: As with Apple could only come a Galaxy S8 Plus or Galaxy S8 Pro with two cameras on the back. The front camera is to have an autofocus – a novelty in Samsung’s smartphone portfolio. Until now, only a few mobile phones, such as those from Sony and Asus, offer this feature.

One thing is for sure: the South Koreans will be very careful with the battery. According to the Korea Herald, the South Koreans will no longer rely solely on batteries from their own home and on the Chinese company ATL, but also on the electricity storage of LG Chem. That sounds believable: Lastly, LG have also developed a particularly safe battery for its upcoming LG G6. Samsung has also launched its own sharper battery test procedure after the fire at the Galaxy Note 7.

The Galaxy S8 should be the first smartphone with Qualcomm’s super processor Snapdragon 835. A special feature: the processor is manufactured in Samsung’s new 10-nanometer FinFET process. Even if Samsung has not confirmed the use of it in the  Galaxy S8, there is still much to be said. Alternatively, the Galaxy S8 could come with different processors depending on the region ( like any other Samsung phone ) where the Exynos 8895 would be a successor to the Samsung Exynos 8890 used in the S7. The faster UFS 2.1 flash memory is to be used for more speed. In the S6 and S7, UFS 2.0 modules were used.

As Phone Arena reported recently, Samsung Galaxy may offer the Galaxy S8 with two memory sizes: with 6 and 8 gigabytes of RAM. Since Samsung has never offered models with different RAM sizes in one country, it is more likely that the 8 gigabyte variant is intended for a single market. So the Galaxy Note 7 should appear with 6 instead of 4 gigabytes in China. Moreover, the internal memory is to be 64 gigabytes and can be extended.

Regarding the core hardware, the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Edge uses at least the technical innovations one already finds in the Galaxy Note 7: an even brighter and more powerful display, an improved camera software, USB type C – and possibly also an iris scanner. A comparison of the most important specifications of the previous models can be found in the overview of Samsung’s Galaxy-S-Class. A difference to previous Galaxy models would be stereo speakers. According to SamMobile should be found on the back and from the recently acquired audio specialist Harman originate. The rumors so far point to a genuine top model with a lot of technical refinements. You may be curious, however, whether the display really can cover the whole front with the display. And if so, whether the smartphone without home key is still good to use. Open is also the position of the fingerprint sensor, which Samsung despite the iris scanners probably hardly abolish completely.
