Sony sold 20 million PS4 units
Sony has announced that it has shipped 20 million PlayStation 4 shipments in its fiscal year ended March 31, 2017. The total sales figure of the console, which exhibits its best yearly performance up to today, is close to 60 million. Sony PS4 sales have reached 40 million by the end of May. In December, this figure rose to 50 million.
The gaming unit continues to be Sony’s best performing line. The unit completed its fiscal year with income of 1.65 trillion yen ( $ 14.7 billion ) and operating profit of 135.6 billion yen ( $ 12.1 billion). Unit sales revenue increased by 6.3 percent and profit by 52.9 percent.
Sony PlayStation 4 sales may have seen the summit of the past year. The company expects to deliver 18 million PS4 shipment during the current financial year. However, the possibility of this decline does not seem to be a concern for the company. As of March 31, 2018, the PS4 will be on sale for more than 4 years. This time appears to be the average of the normal life cycle for game consoles. The current sales trend suggests that the PlayStation 4 can surpass the PlayStation 2, which has reached over 71 million sales in 4 years. The PS2, which has been on sale for as long as 11 years, has completed its life with a sales figure of over 150 million.
It is unlikely that the PS4 will capture the sales figure of the PS2 in the long run. The substantial downgrade of the price of the PS2 in 2006 helped to protect the console’s sales performance. The difference in the architecture of the PS4 will prevent Sony from making a similar discount. Sony has shown that it is taking a different approach by removing the PS4, a more powerful device than the original version.
