Windows 10 Redstone 2 Features
The focus of the Creators Update for the Windows 10 is on 3D. As Microsoft demonstrated at its October event, the Windows platform is designed to seamlessly fit into the three-dimensional reality and be easily operated with the hololens and the Windows VR glasses. The Creators Update now provides the technical tools for the future vision of Microsoft. For example, all Windows 10 users with Paint 3D get a program to create their own 3D objects in just a few steps. But also for the everyday use of Windows 10 on the PC, the update has many improvements to offer. We, at BrightTitan, provide all the important information on the third feature upgrade – as Microsoft calls the expansion pact for Windows 10 – and present the most noticeable changes to the Creators Update.
At Microsoft, they are currently working hard and are already releasing the third pre-release version of the Creators Update in January 2017 with the Build 15014. The update, released for the PC and mobile version of Windows 10, provides a series of improvements. In the announcement, however, the head of the test program Dona Sarkar also informs that the already announced “MyPeople” function will appear with the next big Windows update (Codename: Redstone 3). The aim of the function is to put people in the foreground. Instead of opening extra Skype or Outlook, just click on the person in the menu bar to chat with them or exchange files. So the Creators Update loses an exciting innovation. It is to be hoped that the function will exist with the next update.
However, apart from this setback, Build 15014 again offers a lot of changes. This includes the announcement that the Windows Store gets its own eBook section. In order to read and manage the fonts purchased in Windows 10, the manufacturer upgrades the Edge browser accordingly. With Build 15014 the function is only available for US insiders, but in the coming weeks, more country will follow. When choosing the accent color, Windows 10 finally offers free choice. In the Personalization and Color settings, you can either choose a color palette that is infinitely variable or use the appropriate color code to color the window that fonts around windows, or colors tiles and fonts. With the Creators Update you can buy eBooks in the Windows Store. There is no app for reading and managing. Instead, Microsoft expands the Edge browser as an eBook library and reading program. In the memory settings, the developers have also integrated the option that the operating system automatically deletes unused temporary files as well as more than 30-day-old content from the recycle bin. The function is disabled by default. If you want Windows to independently boot the hard disk, you must first switch it on under System and Memory. The announcement reads, however, so that the function in the future still more unused data to capture. Build 15014 also provides access to the WLAN settings and combines setup options that have previously appeared in different locations. At the request of the notebook manufacturers, Windows 10 receives a slider in the Info Center, which can be used to adjust the performance settings of battery-operated devices. Still, the only insider selected as a graphical element without functionality.
In the coming weeks Microsoft wants to test various scenarios with Dell and Asus , in order to find the appropriate settings for different situations. Cortana also expects the user to make an optical adjustment. In addition, Build 15014 offers numerous small adjustments, so the app usually appears in the menu bar. The version does not only contain improvements, but also a whole list of errors that the developers have to fix in the coming weeks. The comprehensive list of all the improvements, and errors of Build 15014 is available at Microsoft. The following text section provides a review of older reports.
To start with, Cortana learns with the Creators update strongly. From Build 15007 onwards, the digital assistant from Microsoft is helping you to continue working on a different Windows 10 PC. If you register with your user account on another PC, Cortana will display the last visited websites or used documents in the Info Center. By clicking on the note, Edge opens the corresponding Web page or the Word document. In the case of documents, however, the whole thing works only if you have saved it in the cloud. In addition, you have to allow Cortana understandably access to your browsing history as well as the list of the most recently used documents. However, the function is not completely new. With Handoff, Apple has introduced a similar function in OS X 10.10.
Already since December 2016, there are numerous rumors that Microsoft is working on a special game mode for Windows 10. Now Microsoft manager Mike Ybarra officially confirmed the special mode for the gamers. The aim of the game mode is to improve the PC performance when playing games. For this purpose, Windows is to be recognized when a game is started and then the running background processes will return to the necessary minimum. The free resources are then available for the calculation of the game, which, for example, with less powerful PCs can provide a more fluid gaming experience. However, the announcement does not mention how much potential savings can be achieved with this. For this, Microsoft is offering more gaming prospects. Instead of with Twitch (Amazon), gamers will be able to live streams their games via Microsoft’s own streaming platform. The necessary technology for this is already integrated with the Creators Update in every Windows 10, additional software is thus superfluous.
Microsoft has announced that the Creators Update will be released in spring 2017. Meanwhile, there are numerous indications that limit the date. If you follow the rumors, the final version of the Creators Update will be released in early April 2017, corresponding to the version number 1704. The version numbers contain the first two numbers for the year and the last two for the month. According to the timetable, Microsoft would have to adjust the integration of new features at the beginning of March at the latest in order to have enough time for error correction and optimization. Looking at the list of known errors and crashes on the test computers from BrightTitan show that the developers still have their hands full with the fine grinding. Microsoft gave the impression that they are working hard enough: Although the group has so far (as of mid-January 2017) 15 pre-versions for the PC version released, but only the three last builds offered really much new. In addition, some of the features that Microsoft has already announced are missing in the pre-release versions. For example, the “MyPeople” function so far only managed on the website of Microsoft, but not in the Windows beta. The function shows favored contacts in the menu bar. Two clicks are enough to exchange files or messages. Extra Skype or opening the e-mail program is thus unnecessary. The developers must therefore put themselves to the test, if the update should be ready in time.
Anyone who thought Microsoft was running out with regular Windows updates: The Creators update proves the opposite. Even if not all innovations are revealed so far and much is not yet running, the next Windows version is already convincing. Microsoft with its update strategy makes a lot of things right: the Creators Update with the 3D-theme will be an exciting future trend and will not lose sight of the majority of Windows users by integrating numerous useful improvements for everyday use. Sure, with the Creators Update, Microsoft does not invent anything new and none of the changes are convinced by itself. But the many adjustment screws on which the Creators Update is turning, improve Windows noticeably. If Microsoft now decides to release updates for users of Windows 10 Home, and the update is made without major incidents, the manufacturer has come a little closer to the perfect Windows.
But this is not enough: In a blog post, the group announced two updates for 2017. Under the work title Redstone 3, the manufacturer is already working on the refresh package for Windows 10. This is expected to be released in the fall of 2017 and is expected to bring the first major design update for Windows 10. In addition, the company already surprised with the announcement that the PC version of Windows 10 will soon run on smartphone chips, in contrast to Windows RT, but this time without compromising. So far, all the company’s attempts to gain a foothold in the mobile sector have failed due to the limited availability of the apps. Whether Microsoft with Redstone 3 will bypass this problem or stay in such a place after all of these years remains unknown. In the context, messages from the world of technology are buzzing again and again, that Microsoft is still producing the surface phone, which has been longed for. Also in the Continuum (offers the possibility to use the smartphone as a spare PC), further improvements are to be expected in this context.
Since 2015, Microsoft is only talking about Windows 10. But those who look more closely can quickly determine: It is not that simple. November Update, Anniversary Update, Creators Update, Version 1511, 1607 or even 1704 – you understood why they were special right? No problem: we provide an overview. The first serve was Windows 10 on July 29, 2015. The code name was Threshold 1, bearing the version number 1507 – the first two numbers for the year, the other two for the month, July 2015. In November 2015 Microsoft put the first Big update with the Codename Threshold 2 after. Windows 10 was still Windows 10, but the version number climbed to 1511 according to the release date. Microsoft then took a little more time to get the Anniversary Update in summer 2016. The update under the code name Redstone 1 raised the version number of Windows 10 to 1607. With the Creators Update (CodenameD: Redstone 2), it now stands the third expansion package at the door. To check which Windows version is working on the PC, press the Windows key and R at the same time. The Run window will open. Type version and click Ok. The now appearing info window reveals in the second line, which Windows 10 version is installed.
Since the introduction of Windows 10, Microsoft is pursuing not only a new product but also a fresh development strategy. Through the Windows Insider program, the development department distributes several beta versions of the operating system on a monthly basis. As an interested user, you are able to enjoy fresh versions beforehand – however, the new functions are still fault-prone and therefore not suitable for PCs that are in regular use. Microsoft differentiates between “Fast Ring”, “Slow Ring” and “Release Preview Ring” for its beta deliveries. Testers who have opted for the first-mentioned mode get fresh pre-versions sometimes in the week cycle. In this case, however, there are usually numerous ways to severe program errors. If a new version is sufficiently stable and reliable, Microsoft will pass it on to the testers in the “Slow Ring” for the final test. If it has proved itself here as well, it lands in the newly introduced “Release Preview Ring”. Anyone who decides to use this setting will be least likely to receive updates, but will also be less likely to encounter errors.
