Microsoft Surface Laptop & Windows 10

Why Microsoft repeats its mistake?

Microsoft has announced the launch of a new operating system called Windows 10 S in an event which was held on Tuesday. Windows 10 S is basically an operating system that competes against Google’s Chrome OS. Chrome OS was an operating system built on the same foundation as Google’s Chrome internet browser. Google, which came out a few years ago, is now at a significant point with Chrome OS. Chrome apps are expected to make a big leap as Android apps get supported.

Devices that depend on Google’s services, which are essentially connected to the Internet, and which have the highest efficiency but which offer opportunities to do business even when they are not connected to the Internet, are attracting a lot of attention. Especially in the field of education these computers are being used extensively.

At last, Microsoft realized the success of the Chrome OS, and came with their own version. Although Microsoft has made the operating system’s output available with a relatively high-priced $ 999 laptop, the Windows 10 S will be available on PCs that are much cheaper for students such as HP, Dell, and Acer.

Windows 10 S has some limitations compared to standard Windows 10 versions. It is only possible to download and use apps and games that are purchased through the Windows Store or that can be downloaded for free. In addition, users can only use Microsoft Edge as the default Internet browser.

Such restrictions shouldn’t be ignored as Microsoft has brought the previous Windows RT initiative years. Released at the same time as Windows 8, Windows RT was specially developed for convertible devices that host ARM-based processors and was first released with a product called Surface RT. Microsoft hoped that the Windows application ecosystem would evolve with these more affordable devices compared to Windows 8-installed devices, but things did not work out. As a user I have used a Surface RT before, Windows RT has never reflected the usual Windows experience. For me, Windows RT was an incomplete experience of the Windows, not just from the store, but also from the experience of installing programs by downloading any .exe or similar extensions downloaded from the internet. Moreover, the number of RT supported applications remained very limited.

First, the device manufacturers gave up making Windows RT-based devices, then Microsoft dropped its support. Now about four years later, we see a similar adventure with Windows 10 S again. With Windows RT, the target volume was much larger, but this time we see that the focus is on training. The framework of the education sector’s needs is drawn to a much more specific boundaries, and applications and games that can be installed from the Windows Store will more than meet the needs of most learners. However, with Windows 10 S, although Microsoft has several limitations, their severity seems less than Windows RT. For example, classic Windows programs will be available from the Windows Store if they are packaged appropriately. In addition, long battery life can be one of the key weapons of Windows 10 S devices. The Surface Laptop was said to have a high battery life of 14 hours. The same applies to other Windows 10 S devices.

Microsoft is experimenting with Windows 10 S, similar to Windows RT. This time the target is more likely to be hold the project because it is narrower and the constraints are kept a little looser.
