Microsoft redesigned the Skype
Microsoft bought Skype six years ago. The popular communication service seems to have suffered from a kind of “identity crisis” ever since. Skype, which slowly turned into a cloud service, underwent design changes on this journey and had to cope with various problems. The service, which was developed with features such as free video group interview and Skype Web, did not maintain a stable line of design and features against new competitors such as FaceTime, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. However, Microsoft once again showed that it would not give up trying Skype and the new design came to light.
The new design, defined as “Next generation Skype” by Microsoft, seems to have been chosen as the focus point. Although Skype is often preferred for voice or video chats, Nowadays chats are going through services such as iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Snapchat. In the revamped messaging interface, there are three chats with chats called “find”, “chat” and “grab”. Find allows users to search through chat, find pictures or restaurants, or access content that will color conversations with YouTube and Giphy add-ons. Chat is the main chat screen with options for adding emoji and pictures as can be guessed.
Among those three sections, the foreground is the “Capture” section. This part of the episode is a Snapchat wind in Skype. When this tab is toggled, the camera is instantly activated. Users can record videos by holding their fingers on the shutter button. At this time, a curved line shows the record time. The line is also seen when searching for a person or writing a message. After video recording or photo capture is complete, it is also possible to extract the content or embed the text. It would not be wrong to say that he brought Snapchat to mind.
Skype’s new Highlights feature brings to mind Snapchat Stories. At highlights, the photos and videos shared by the users can respond to their feelings. Even in written or video chats, users can respond to their friends with their feelings. Skype seems to have taken care of using the messaging elements everywhere in the new interface. Microsoft will bring its new design to users on Android first, then it will be followed by iOS, Windows and Mac.
